Project 35 – Projections In Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
If you like you like to discover art while strolling it’s well worth a wander down Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne – just go after dark. Here’s a few of the lovely and intriguing video projections gracing pavements, buildings, shop windows and more for the next few weeks as part of the Project 35 exhibition. My kids loved discovering the works as we walked along.
Gertrude Contemporary is very pleased to present Project 35. This extraordinary travelling exhibition features 35 of the world’s most pivotal contemporary video works. Organised by the Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York these works were selected by 35 key curators from countries across the globe including Mami Kataoka (Japan), Raimundas Malasauskas (Lithuania/France) and Hans Ulrich Obrist (Switzerland/UK).

Dogs In Waiting – Keeping An Eye Out For You
This lovely golden creature was a regular at our old library – now bulldozed to make way for a new one scheduled to open late 2012. I liked how this dingo-like dog would take a seat in a very casual way rather than wait on the ground for its owner to emerge loaded up with a week worth of books to keep busy with. I reckon it’d be a couch dog for sure. Click to make bigger.

Convenience 1960’s Style – Save 2 Feet

“The remaining 80 percent of jobs, the researchers report, are sedentary or require only light activity. The shift translates to an average decline of about 120 to 140 calories a day in physical activity, closely matching the nation’s steady weight gain over the past five decades, according to the report, published Wednesday in the journal PLoS One.”
Did we not see it coming? The workplace, the home front – everywhere the world went “automatic” and “convenient” – somewhere the equation had to shift. If you save energy where does it get saved to? Your belly apparently.
PS- On saving feet – Walking 33 metres a day will have you covering around 122 kilometres a year. Put your phone further away from wherever you are!

Convenience 60’s Style – The Telephone
“When you see it, you know that service and protection are always close at hand.” Convenience and women “saving steps” was a recurring theme throughout the sixties if the contents of my collection of vintage The American Home magazine is anything to go by – and grapefruits – an obsession with grapefruits. The 60’s was an era fixated on telecommunications and what appears to have been a very fashionable fruit. More to come on that in future posts.
